What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental Bonding is a type of cosmetic dentistry where a tooth-colored composite material, or resin, is sculpted, hardened, and polished after being applied to a tooth. The resin bonds (giving the name) to the tooth and is best used for small, cosmetic dental work like chipped teeth, or gaps. Dental bonding can also be used to fill in cavities as a more appealing alternative to traditional fillings.

The tooth bonding procedure is as follows:

Preparation: there isn’t as much preparation for teeth bonding as there is for other dental procedures. Dr. Edmond Ahdoot will determine the resin color that most closely resembles the color of your teeth. He and his staff will then determine whether or not anesthesia will be applied (which usually isn’t the case unless bonding is used to fill a cavity or is placed near a nerve).

Bonding: The bonding process involves roughening of the tooth and applying a conditioning liquid which is used to help the bonding material mesh with the tooth. Your custom resin is then applied, molded, and smoothed into the correct shape after which a laser sets the material to harden. Once hardened, Dr. Ahdoot will trim and shape the tooth, polishing it to match your bite.

How long does the dental bonding procedure last, you might ask? All-in-all the procedure shouldn’t last more than 30 to 60 minutes.

As you might have guessed, there is a certain amount of artistry that goes into cosmetic bonding. It’s always a good idea to see some tooth bonding before and after pictures from past procedures. Dr. Ahdoot has provided some samples here and will be more than happy to supply you with more upon request.

Dental Bonding Pros and Cons

If you’re thinking that bonding is a “jack-of-all-trades” dental procedure, then you’re on the right track. However, there are some advantages and disadvantages to tooth bonding that you should be aware of.

Advantages:

Teeth bonding is an inexpensive, relatively quick, and easy cosmetic dental procedure. While crowns and veneers are highly customized and can take time to manufacture, dental bonding can be an alternative for those minor dental procedures. You can be in and out of the office in one visit (unless you’re bonding multiple teeth).

Another advantage to dental bonding is that it’s one of the least damaging procedures to your enamel (when compared to crowns or veneers).

Disadvantages:

While the resin material is improving it can still stain much more easily than veneers or crowns. It is also not a wholly permanent procedure as over time the bonding will start to deteriorate, chip, or break off of your tooth.

It is important to consult a well-trained dentist, like Dr. Ahdoot, when making a cosmetic dental decision. You can rest assured that Dr. Ahdoot will make the proper, educated suggestion and get you on your way to smiling widely!

How Long Does Dental Bonding Last?

It all depends on how much was applied and how well they are taken care of. With good oral habits, dental bonding can last anywhere from three to 10 years before needing a touch-up or full replacement.

How to Care for Your Dental Bonding

As mentioned, tooth bonding is more susceptible to chipping, cracking, and staining than other cosmetic dental procedures. Therefore please take special, preventative care:

  • Cut down or use a straw to consume coffee, tea, and red wine
  • Avoid biting your nails or chewing on hard foods and objects
  • If you smoke, it might be the best time to quit after receiving teeth bonding.

Applications for Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is used to repair:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Cavity fillings
  • Discolored teeth
  • To make teeth look longer
  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Change the shape of teeth
  • Protect a tooth’s root due to receding gums
